This Video Explains Why Parents Shouldn't Just Call Their Daughters Pretty.

Sup Travellers?! It's a fact that most girls care about their looks way more than guys do and over the years it has been slated as a natural phenomenon. But maybe it's not as natural as we make it out to be. Maybe girls care about their looks more because of the way they were brought up.

They were always called pretty and advised not to get dirty and whatnot. This could be seen as positive priming into womanhood for some but maybe it isn't as positive as it appears.

Boys and girls are both raised differently, as they should, but according to the video above girls are usually only positively reinforced for their looks instead of their curiosity in academics. Verizon believes that this is one of the main reason why there is a huge gender gap in science and technology industries.

Currently, according to the National Science Foundation, 66 percent of 4th grade girls show interest in math and sciences, while girls make up only 18 percent of college engineering majors.

In order to change this shocking statistic, we need to raise girls who both feel comfortable in their own bodies and also believe they have a welcoming place in the world of maths and sciences.

The video was posted on June 2nd by Verizon and amassed as much as 2 million views. It definitely raises a valid point and I think some similar valid points can be raised for boys as well. A lot of boys aren't comfortable doing stuff like ballet and poetry because of how they were primed. But that's a different topic altogether. Anyway, my name is Trinikid and you've just been informed.
