Teenagers Sentenced To 6 Months In Prison And 91 Lashes For Dancing To Pharrell's "Happy"

Sup Travellers?! A group of about six teenagers filmed a really cool video of themselves dancing to Pharrell's "Happy" song. The video went viral and everything seemed great for the youths but there was just one little problem.

In Iran freedom is frowned upon by authorities so three women without hijabs dancing in the streets next to three men to a hit pop song is considered a criminal offence.

The six teens were arrested in May 2014 and were sentenced on Wednesday to six months in prison and 91 lashes. The director of the video, Sassan Solemani, got a longer one-year sentence and the same amount of lashes.

After making the confession, they were released on bail and some have even been able to travel in and out of the country

The group now has a choice whether to accept the verdict or appeal.

Pharrell himself heard about the incident and protested the arrests on Facebook, posting: "It is beyond sad that these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness."

Life in the middle east is really different from life in the western world and I'm not sure if I should be grateful that I'm not living in the middle east or sad that freedom is something that is not appreciated everywhere. I know that freedom has limits and whatnot but freedom of expression should never be jeopardized especially when it does more good than harm. But at the end of the day, I'm not the Iranian government and my say is worthless in that regard. Anyway, my name is Trinikid and you've just been informed.
