TRINIDAD: More Legal Trouble For Ian Alleyne.

Greetings Travellers!! Who remembers the day when Ian Alleyne was arrested? It was really big news that swept the nation by storm but since October of 2011 the matter has not yet been settled in court. According to reports from the Express the famed crime fighter changed his pleas from not guilty to guilty after reappearing in the Port of Spain Magistrates Court. He pleaded guilty on three of his charges under the Sexual Offences Act.

Alleyne was charged with the offences after he aired a video on three separate occasions during his programme in October of 2011, showing the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

He faces an additional charge of resisting arrest against ASP Ajith Persad of the Port of Spain Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Alleyne maintained his not guilty plea on that charge.

It was during the re reading of the charges that Mr. Alleyne changed his plead from not guilty to guilty. Due to this, Mr. Alleyne is expected to be sentenced on Monday the 11th of March 2013.

The legislation states: "A person who publishes or broadcasts any matter contrary to subsection 1 is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of twenty-five thousand dollars and to imprisonment for five years."

CCN TV6 is facing the same three charges and six additional charges contrary to the Telecommunications Act. The company has however maintained its not guilty pleas on all nine charges.

So according to this there is a possibility that Ian Alleyne will be fined for $25,000TT and sent to jail for five years. But the question at the end of the day is why did he change his plea to guilty? Knowing the state of the court system in Trinidad if he had pleaded not guilty the case might have been easily postponed for 4 years. What was Ian Alleyne thinking? Maybe he was tired of the politics.
